Middlesbrough have today announced they have sacked Head Coach Aitor Karanka with immediate effect.

The Spaniard had been entrenched in the dugout at the Riverside for three-and-a-half years and led ‘Boro back to the Premier League last season after seven years in the Championship.

After enduring a run of 10 Premier League games without a win dating back to last year and the club plummeting down the table and into the relegation zone, a decision has been made to relieve Karanka of his duties.

The 43-year-old has spoken about his exit:

I’d like to thank Middlesbrough for a wonderful opportunity and the players, staff and all the people at the club who I have worked with. I’d also like to thank the fans for their support. This club will always hold a special place for me and I wish everyone connected with Middlesbrough Football Club the very best for the future.

Steve Agnew will step up from his role as assistant Head Coach to take control of first team affairs with immediate effect.
