Why is Downing key for Boro?
Stewart Downing came through the Boro ranks, and after a stint away from his hometown club, the winger moved back last season. But can Downing be vital for Boro this season?
I think it’s fair to say that we were expecting a lot from Stewart last season, and on the whole, I don’t think he delivered. He didn’t have the attacking flair he had been showing the season before for West Ham. he may have been nervous, as he was looked upon as one of the main players to get us promoted. Or maybe it’s just that he only performs at the highest level. I’d prefer the latter.
Downing has started each of Boro’s first 4 games of the season and has been a bit of an unsung hero in many regards. He hasn’t done anything out of the ordinary, but what he has done is help keep Boro flowing going forward. When we have lost our way in games attacking wise, Downing has helped relieve a bit of pressure, and against Sunderland, he helped turn the game on its head. making numerous runs into attacking positions, drifting into the centre and then out wide, causing havoc for defenders.
He has started the season very well, and to improve I would like to see a few more assists and goals on the score sheet, but as long as he uses his experience to keep us ticking going forward, we should be fine.
